Buhari’s NGN1.14bn ‘Gift’ to Niger; magnanimity at the expense of Nigeria’s survival

On 3rd August 2022, Nigerians woke up to the news of an alleged purchase and presentation of luxury SUV’s by the presidency to the Republic of Niger.

Just when we thought we had seen through worst of this regime and that President Buhari could not surprise us anymore, he pulled another trick off his sleeve to reassure us that he is not done with his mission to collapse this country before he leaves Aso Rock for good on 29th May 2023.

All thanks to the dexterity of investigative journalist David Hundeyin, Nigerians would have been left in the dark over this outrightly ridiculous expenditure. However, what is more worrisome is the reason for this generous donation.

The minister of Finance Zainan Ahmed, clarified that this donation was to aid the West African nation’s security apparatus, apparently, luxury vehicles were dire needs for security agencies in Niger and not guns, ammunition or tanks.

What is most worrisome is that Nigeria has not been able to tackle it’s insecurity woes over the last decade, but have the effrontery to spend such an amount of money to contribute to the ‘security’ of another country with far less security issues.

Less than 3 weeks ago, the convoy of Mr President was attacked by bandits, they have not been captured, no one has been arrested over the unfortunate and disgraceful incident, but President Buhari thinks it is in the interest of Nigerians to spend NGN1.14bn on another country’s supposed security.

Obviously, these SUV’s will be far put from anything that has to do with security because they are not tanks, bulletproof and neither were they built to fight crime, these are luxury vehicles that only the extremely wealthy with unique and expensive taste can afford.

Nigeria itself doesn’t boast of such vehicles in any of its security agencies, except as official vehicles for its most senior administrative officers which by the way is another ridiculous expenditure on it’s own, but we will not be discussing this topic today.

Let us assume that it is for the purpose  which the presidency claim, what is the reason for spending such an amount of money when you have a dire need for money yourself? How can you give what you don’t have?

In a country where the military is relatively under-equipped despite the existential and perennial security issues, why should this money not go into improving your own security as a country?

These questions are begging to be answered and the fact that we even have to ask these questions shows how more incompetent President Buhari is, in addition to his already established incompetency.

President Buhari is unlocking new levels of misappropriation, corruption, nepotism, tribalism and incompetence. The only consistent feature of his administration is it’s inconsistency in doing what will benefit Nigerians. Of what benefit is this to the common man?

How does providing luxury vehicles for Niger improve the lives of Nigerians or the collapsing economy of Nigeria ? It is now glaring to all Nigerians that President Buhari is clueless and has not even a mild grasp of what true governance is.

It is now more than safe to say that Buhari is a failure. In the league of failed leaders, Buhari stands tall, bold and bright. Nigerians can’t wait to see him leave office come May 29th 2023, oh what a glorious day that would be!
