If you’re an avid football lover, chances are that you’d have been involved in the argument of who’s the greatest ever Nigerian footballer, however Nigeria has produced a number of great footballers over the years and we’d be doing them injustice if we have to select one and leave out the rest out of the bunch of the Super Eagles legends who have adorned the Green and White since our first appearance in. Here are 7 of the most notable footballers to ever grace the Nigerian national team.

  1. Jay-Jay Okocha: Considered by many to be Nigeria’s greatest ever player, Okocha was a creative midfielder who possessed incredible dribbling skills and a lethal shot. He played for several top clubs in Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers.
  2. Nwankwo Kanu: A tall and elegant striker, Kanu won numerous titles with Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal during his career. He also scored the winning goal in the 1996 Olympic final, helping Nigeria win their first ever gold medal in football.
  3. Rashidi Yekini: Yekini was one of Africa’s most prolific goalscorers in the 1990s. He scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the World Cup in 1994 and finished as the tournament’s joint-top scorer.
  4. Segun Odegbami: Odegbami was a talented winger who played for Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. He helped the team win the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and was named the tournament’s best player.
  5. Austin “Jay-Jay” Eguavoen: Eguavoen was a versatile defender who played for Nigeria in the 1990s. He was a member of the team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and also played at the 1994 World Cup.
  6. Vincent Enyeama: Enyeama is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers to come out of Africa. He played for Nigeria at three World Cups and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.

2. Perpetua Nkwocha: Nkwocha is Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in women’s football, with 80 goals in 99 appearances for the national team. She played for the Super Falcons between 2000 and 2015, winning four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles and reaching the quarterfinals of the 2004 Olympic Games.

Victor Osimhen is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a striker. He was born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria.
