However Nigeria has produced a number of great footballers over the years and we’d be doing them injustice if we have to select one and leave out the rest out of the bunch of the Super Eagles legends who have adorned the Green and White since our first appearance in.
Here are 7 of the most notable footballers to ever grace the Nigerian national team.
Considered by many to be Nigeria’s greatest ever player, Okocha was a creative midfielder who possessed incredible dribbling skills and a lethal shot. He played for several top clubs in Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers.
A tall and elegant striker, Kanu won numerous titles with Ajax, Inter Milan, and Arsenal during his career. He also scored the winning goal in the 1996 Olympic final, helping Nigeria win their first ever gold medal in football.
Yekini was one of Africa’s most prolific goalscorers in the 1990s. He scored Nigeria’s first-ever goal at the World Cup in 1994 and finished as the tournament’s joint-top scorer.
Odegbami was a talented winger who played for Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. He helped the team win the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and was named the tournament’s best player.
Austin “Jay-Jay” Eguavoen
Eguavoen was a versatile defender who played for Nigeria in the 1990s. He was a member of the team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and also played at the 1994 World Cup.
Enyeama is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers to come out of Africa. He played for Nigeria at three World Cups and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.
Oliseh was a talented midfielder who played for Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup. He scored a stunning long-range goal in the team’s opening game against Spain and helped Nigeria reach the second round.
