Rape: A Survivor’s Story

It was a blissful morning in Musuuona, a largely industrial town located East of the River Niger which banked the popular Chelewim international market where traders from West and Central Africa usually converged to engage in all sort of business dealings.

The birds had taken to the sky, gliding as they receive an early morning dose of ‘Vitamin D’ from the sun which shone so brightly, yet very mild on the skin. Celestina had just finished chopping ugu leaves (vegetable) delegated by her ‘aunt’, Ukaego, it was her husband’s birthday and she had instructed Celestina to make his favourite delicacy, Egusi soup and pounded yam.

“Look me I look you…..ta na na na” she sang the popular Odingba’s 2013 hit single ‘no do me wayo’, fumbling the lyrics for the most part as she stretched to pick up the bowl containing Okporoko (stock fish) that she had soaked in warm water a few minutes earlier.

Celestina wore a broad smile as she sang gracefully whilst washing off the dead insects amuck the stock fish. Everyone in the neighborhood, young & old had come to fall in love with Celestina because of her cheerful and playful disposition at almost every instance, but what people didn’t know was that this was a facade because behind all the smile & laughter were eyes drowned in tears of despair and abuse.

John, her aunt’s husband had been sexually abusing her since she came to live with them a year ago in order to enroll in a prominent secondary school to sit for her WAEC examinations, she was 16 years old at the time.

It started with inappropriate touches here and there. The first time it happened, left Celestina confused for days as her juvenile mind could not comprehend why her aunty’s husband, Uncle John, would suddenly grab her in secluded places around the house and fondle her privates roughly.

It was repulsively frightening but then how does she start recounting these acts of sexual violence about innocent looking Uncle John, who always has a faint smile on his face when conversing with people.

The real nightmare started for Celestina when Aunty Ukaego traveled for work and Uncle John raped her repeatedly, the next time was always more violent than the last.

The violent rape scenes would have its reruns in Celestina’s head but she was too scared to cry out. She was afraid of the uproar this single revelation will elicit in the family, afraid of a possible backlash, afraid of what her seemingly sweet uncle might do or say to discredit her( it was her words against his after all), most of all she was dead scared of having to repeatedly recount the ordeal as the thought of it alone brings so much horror.

So Celestina stayed mute, her outward appearance showed carefully crafted bliss but inwardly she was wailing, screaming for help, desperately waiting for someone to notice what was really going on beneath her facade and come to her aid but then the backlash of the horrible ordeal began to replicate itself in different areas of her life; she had bruises and pains, she was emotionally distressed because the consistent feeling of guilt and shame always made her feel depressed.

The nightmares took the backlash to another level but then the big blow came for Celestina when her WAEC results came and she performed very poorly as she could barely study due to her emotional/psychological instability.

Known for her academic prowess and brightness, the result was a surprise to everyone except Mrs. Carina, her home lesson teacher whose keen eyes and observant antenna picked up Celestina’s signal quickly when she started acting strange during private lesson periods even though she tried to cover it all up with a fake cheerful countenance.

Mrs. Carina understood what was happening to Celestina, immediately because she had been in Celestina’s shoes previously as a sexual abuse survivor. She tried to get Celestina to talk but soon perceived the young one’s fear.

She decided to take matters into her own hands by coming to the house on days when she is not expected for her services and Aunty Ukaego has gone for her usual work trip. On one of her trips to the house unexpectedly she caught Uncle John in the violent act with young Celestina and captured the scene with her video camera.

Mrs. Carina called for a family meeting and presented the video to everyone which gave Celestina the courage to finally speak up as Mrs. Carina had given her a head up with the assurance to help her.

Uncle John was arrested for sexual abuse/rape and Celestina was taken to the hospital then to therapy where she recovered after consistent uplifting therapy sections with love and support from Mrs. Carina, her family and her friends.

Victims may encounter chronic pain, sexual dysfunction, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and gynecological complications. Rape can cause severe physical injuries and pain to the victim. In this story, Celestina endures sexual abuse, which could lead to physical trauma, bruises, and potential long-term health issues.
Emotional Distress. Victims of sexual abuse often suffer from intense emotional distress, such as feelings of guilt, shame, and worthlessness. They may also experience anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading to difficulties in forming trusting relationships and coping with everyday challenges. The story portrays Celestina as a cheerful and playful person on the outside, but inside, she is burdened with immense emotional distress. Self-Esteem and Self-Worth Issues. Rape can cause survivors to experience a decline in self-esteem and a sense of worthlessness. Celestina may blame herself for the abuse or feel inadequate, leading to self-destructive behaviors.
Substance Abuse and Self-Harm. Some survivors turn to substance abuse or self-harm as coping mechanisms to deal with the pain and trauma. It is not uncommon for victims to seek temporary relief from their emotional distress through these harmful means. Some victims may turn to substance abuse as a way to self-medicate, leading to addiction and further exacerbating their mental and physical health issues.
Long-Term Impact on Well-being. The effects of rape can extend well into the future, impacting various aspects of Celestina’s life, including her ability to form healthy relationships, pursue her dreams, and enjoy a fulfilling life.

Revictimization. In some cases, survivors of sexual abuse may find themselves in abusive relationships or situations repeatedly, as the trauma can make them vulnerable to further victimization.

Impact on Parenting. The negative impact of sexual abuse can span for a life time and when Survivors of sexual abuse become parents, they may face challenges in parenting due to their trauma, potentially affecting their ability to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for their children.

It is crucial to recognize the seriousness of sexual abuse and provide support, compassion, and professional help to survivors. Healing from sexual abuse is a complex process that requires understanding, empathy, and a safe environment where victims can share their experiences and work towards recovery.
