After a challenging 2022, the Nigerian women’s basketball team, known as “D’Tigress,” faced the necessity for a significant overhaul. Their tumultuous year included a ban by the Federal Government, resulting in their expulsion from the FIBA World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Furthermore, their coach, Otis Hughley, stepped down, and several crucial players departed due to the crisis.

However, a ray of hope emerged when the NBBF made a groundbreaking decision to appoint a 31-year-old Nigerian woman as the D’Tigress new coach.

A force to be reckoned with, this US-based dynamo hails from Rivers State, Nigeria and has been making waves in the world of basketball. Recently appointed as the head coach of the revered D’Tigress on June 30th, 2023, Rena’s journey to success is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Having spent her formative years in the US, Rena Wakama’s passion for basketball led her to play professionally in the UK, where she showcased her exceptional skills both on and off the court. Notably, she was a pivotal player for the D’Tigress, contributing significantly to their triumphant victories as the three-time consecutive champions in 2017, 2019, and 2021.

Yesterday marked a historic moment for Nigeria Basket Ball Federation and also for Rena Wakama as D’Tigress won the tournament, the fourth consecutive time and Rena Wakama became the first female coach to secure the title. Wow! our pride in her achievement knows no bounds.
